Toyotas hold their value, which means sellers ask a lot for them. A Tacoma with a rusty frame or a worn-out 4WD system can cost far more than you saved. I check the truck where it sits and give you the facts before you pay.

What I pay close attention to on a Toyota or Tacoma
Frame condition
Tacoma frames are worth a careful look, especially on older trucks. I inspect the frame rails underneath for rust, scaling, repairs and damage, and photograph them for you.
4WD and the drivetrain
On the road test I check that four-wheel drive engages and that the differentials stay quiet, and I look underneath for differential and transfer-case seepage.
Lifts and aftermarket parts
Lift kits, big tires and other modifications are common. I note what’s been changed and check how it’s holding up, including steering, suspension and tire wear.
Off-road wear underneath
I look for dents, scrapes and bent parts on the skid plates, exhaust and suspension that tell you how the truck has been used.
Hybrid systems
On a RAV4 Hybrid, Prius or other hybrid I check for warning messages and scan the hybrid system where supported. I don’t measure battery capacity, and I tell you exactly what was and wasn’t tested.
Leaks and maintenance signs
I check fluids, look for oil and coolant leaks, and point out anything that suggests deferred maintenance.
