What I pay close attention to on a Jeep
Steering and front end
I check the steering for play and listen for clunks, and watch for shaking at speed on the road test—worn front-end parts are common on solid-axle Jeeps.
4WD and the transfer case
I check that four-wheel drive engages properly and look underneath for transfer-case and differential seepage.
Lifts and modifications
Lifts, bigger tires and aftermarket parts are the norm. I note what’s been changed and how it’s holding up.
Frame and underside
I check the frame, skid plates and suspension for rust, dents and off-road damage, and photograph what I find.
Oil leaks
Oil leaks are worth a close look on Jeep engines. I check the engine and underneath for seepage.
Water leaks and electronics
I look for signs of water getting in through the top and doors, and scan the computers for stored codes.
