A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS

Finding your footing?
Start here.

Data supplied by NHTSA vPIC ↗.

Where do I find the VIN?+

Look at the driver-side dashboard through the windshield, the driver’s door jamb, or ask the seller for the VIN from the vehicle’s documents. Compare it with the actual vehicle before buying.

Will it work for a classic car?+

Standard modern VINs have 17 characters. Coverage varies for older vehicles and some imports. If your classic doesn’t decode, you can still order an inspection and enter the vehicle information manually.

Why are some details missing?+

NHTSA may not have every specification for a particular VIN. A blank field means no value was returned; it doesn’t mean the feature is absent. Your inspector can review and correct vehicle details.

Is this a vehicle-history report?+

No. This tool decodes manufacturer specifications. It doesn’t provide accident, title, ownership or mileage history, or certify current condition.
